Equity
When everyone is given the same tools and resources without regard to where they are at emotionally, physically, financially, and socially, inequity is inevitable. Individuals have differing needs for learning and growing and these differences need to be honored in order to create equity in our schools.
For example, you would not hand someone who cannot see letters clearly on a page a book without an accommodation to remedy the clarity of the letters and expect them to successfully take a pop quiz on the first chapter. In order to bring that individual up to the baseline of the others in the classroom who have good vision, they might need some glasses, a magnifying glass, or even an audio book in order to accomplish the same assignment. Some of our students may are struggling in a very visual way, that can be remedied, while others are struggling in ways that are not as visible but still are barriers to learning in the classroom. These barriers can be food insecurity, mental health needs, medical conditions that are hidden, or social issues that culture, race, sexuality, or gender based. All of our kids need to be supported and met where they are in order to for them to succeed in their education and become the awesome people they were meant to be.
As a school board member, I will create a pathway to equity for our students, so they can get the education they deserve to have.
